If high accuracy or complex and precise movements are required, the absolute encoder should be used. In this case, any position in the measuring range is identified by the unique code on the disc. This code is represented as a transparent area on the disc, and opaque in different positions/tracks. Their combination results in an absolute number. You always have the position value, no need for a counter.
